Book recommendation: in case you are still looking for a special gift idea to send directly beneath someone’s Christmas tree via their mailbox, may I suggest a book. This book! The E. J. Hughes Book of Boatsis the third in a series by Robert Amos. Published back on September 22, 2020, this book was a bit of a surprise, but a delightful one. It is a study of that classic coastal pastime watching the ships sail by.

Robert’s first two books have covered E.J. Hughes’ artistic accomplishments in great detail so far, with his prior books E. J. Hughes Paints British Columbia, and E.J. Hughes Paints Vancouver Island. There is more ground to cover in Hughes career, and I believe Robert is already working on the next book in the series. I have a feeling some of the best work is yet to come! Edward John Hughes (1913–2007) was a rather quiet and modest figure, and as a result, there is still a great amount of study that could take place regarding his life’s work, one of the top historical artists in the province.

The book is very reasonably priced at $22, or could even be ordered as a $10 ebook. A much deeper examination of the book can be found in the recent Ormsby Review, I heartily recommend it. https://ormsbyreview.com/2020/11/15/966-harvey-hughes-boats/
